Fingerprint Attendance System

case study

Problem

Recently, there has been an increase in the adoption of biometrics for employee clock-in and clock-out time verification and student attendance tracking. This development has addressed several issues in our daily lives:

    • It is more time-efficient as it only requires a person’s fingerprint, which is instantly sent to the cloud and stored in the database. This process takes only a few seconds, making attendance tracking quicker and easier.
    • Biometrics-based attendance systems are more secure than other methods like ID card scanning, which can be done by anyone other than the card owner. Biometrics are more reliable as it verifies the physical presence of the person.
    • In educational institutions, attendance is traditionally taken by calling out students’ names, which can be time-consuming and interrupt the lecture. Biometric-based attendance systems are a quicker and less disruptive alternative as it only requires the student to tap their finger to mark their attendance.
    • Biometric-based attendance systems are more systematic, and attendance records can be easily traced back whenever needed, while manual attendance systems are less systematic and harder to trace.

Overall, the adoption of biometric-based attendance systems has proved to be beneficial in many aspects.

Solution & Impact

Our project, “Fingerprint Attendance System”, will be strategically constructed and will have a small design, making it more efficient in its portability. It will address the significant weakness of our current attendance system, which is manually taking and storing student attendance records. The system begins with the students enrolling themselves with their personal information, and then they enroll their fingerprints on the system. Once this step has been completed, the students can switch to the attendance mode in the sensor and tap their fingers on the sensor. Once the finger is identified, the student will be marked present for the day. The prototype will also include a display that will show which mode is in use and if the student is marked present.

Resource

Hardware: Arduino UNO, AS608 Fingerprint scanner module, and essential components.

Software: Pycharm, Firebase, Arduino IDE and Android Studio

This project was a resounding success. Our team was chosen to represent our university at the prestigious University Entrepreneurship Program hosted by the Dubai Future Foundation.
